The title for the record is taken from a quote I heard form the great bass player Dave Holland reflecting on his first outing with Miles Davis. He took the Sufi teaching "take your banner and plant it firmly in the sand" as a way to help the musicians on the bandstand "see" and react to you by stating yourself clearly.
