about

I took my dad to Nashville for my 40th birthday. I had been many times but he had not. It was a surprisingly cold November which I hadn't prepared for and in trying to save a little money we tried to walk instead of taking cabs. Turns out walking is not a thing you do there, it's pretty lonesome on those streets.
We had a fantastic and testing time (the latter was probably due to me, milestone right?).I love that city but I also see it's similarities to other cities and more importantly the similarity between people.

lyrics

A water jug, some paper cups, a tired looking plant,
A nervous kid making drinks and playing Townes Van Zandt,
fifteen people, fifteen screens, no sound but keys and Townes,
this place is like most others, it could easily bring you down.

Fresh from the road I listen to some crew behind me talking,
sharing stories from the road of conceited hired guns,
unlikely that I'm on their list, a place requires more fame,
their opinion doesn't bother me still I hope to hear my name.

It's cold for this time of year, everyone keeps saying,
the taxi drivers turn up the heat, the players keep on playing.

Nobody walks round here but me, homeless guys and junkies,
I button up my winter coat and check I've got some change,
I know I shouldn't drink tonight or hit the local dive,
it's better than waiting round to die if you don't know how to be alive.

It's cold for this time of year, everyone keeps saying,
the taxi drivers turn up the heat, the players keep on,,,,
living from that old tip jar playing to folks like me,
from the stage, behind the wheel, trying to make ends meet.
