A year or so ago I stepped in on bass
with a touring bluegrass band from the US. There was a somewhat difficult dynamic with the personalities in the band. One of the leaders of the group was overheard referring to us as ‘sideman’ in trying to placate another of the leaders who was, pretty unjustly unhappy with our input. It was confusing to see exactly how little some performers understand the
level of support we can give as ‘sidemen’.

I'm your sideman in overwork clothes, damp smelling T-shirt, stale taste in my mouth. The commitment I give you onstage is absurd, there's no way in hell I could polish your song.

You pay for my patience, hard work and time, you check out at ten when it should've been nine.
The money is poor but the living is rich, but dying onstage, thats not how I get my kicks.

This morning's hangover and uncomfortable chair help me to hide from your maniacal stare. Hours of sitting and biting my tongue, this shit show of friendship is long since undone.
